The Heritage of Green Hills, a vibrant, wellness-focused senior living community in Shillington, Pa., has recently renovated two of its most beloved and well-used spaces: its four-season indoor/outdoor pool and its state-of-the-art fitness center.
Stunning Pool Now Open After Updates
The indoor pool at The Heritage of Green Hills has long been a centerpiece of the community, and for good reason. It’s where interested residents gather for various types of weekly water exercises, incredibly popular and spirited water volleyball games three times a week, and festive poolside parties throughout the year.
Originally built in 2009, the pool was ready for an update — and the improvements go far beyond surface level.
“We replastered and retiled the pool, repainted the exterior structure, and updated the mechanical systems so everything functions beautifully,” says Executive Director Doug Walther.
One of the most striking features of the space — its stunning light-filled glass enclosure — has been enhanced even further. The retractable ceiling, made up of multiple sections, has been recoated and upgraded, allowing it to open more smoothly and bring fresh air and natural light into the space when the weather permits.
“We also replaced a number of sliding glass doors so we can really let the outside in on beautiful days,” Walther explains.
Additional upgrades include a new boiler system, keeping the pool at a comfortable 86 degrees and the hot tub at 99 degrees; repairs to heating systems and infrastructure; and a fully refreshed pool deck, which was stripped, resealed, and repainted.
The project was completed in phases over approximately 10 weeks, with careful attention paid to each detail. In total, the community invested nearly $150,000 into the renovation.
“Our pool isn’t just a pretty ornament that we show off on tours,” Walther says. “It gets used a lot, and everyone is excited that it’s open again.”
Part of the pool’s appeal is its thoughtful raised design. The water level sits about two and a half feet above ground, allowing residents to sit on the edge and ease into the water comfortably. In addition, carefully positioned stairs help swimmers enter and exit the pool confidently.
With the winning combination of the warm water, a beautiful setting, and a welcoming senior-friendly atmosphere, it’s easy to see why the space remains a favorite amenity and gathering spot.
A Bright New Energy in the Fitness Center
In addition to the pool, The Heritage’s fitness center also received a refresh, creating a space that feels both modern and motivating.
“We redid the flooring, updated the lighting and design, and added some spectacular new equipment, including a new recumbent bike,” Walther says. “We’ve also added a new koi fish to the center’s huge aquarium.”
The revamped space supports a wide range of wellness goals. Residents can take full advantage of daily group fitness classes, including dance, yoga, Pilates, tai chi, sittercise, and drummercise, or choose to work out independently.
An Investment in Health and Happiness
At its core, this renovation project is about more than updated spaces — it’s about enhancing residents’ overall wellness.
From morning exercise routines to social gatherings and spontaneous moments with neighbors, the pool and fitness center play a vital role in community life. With these updates, they’re better equipped than ever to support connection, movement, and well-being.
And for residents at The Heritage of Green Hills, that means more opportunities to stay active, comfortable — in functional spaces that feel as good as they look.
