Neighbors Helping Neighbors: The Heritage Resident Benefit Fund Keeps a Community Together

At The Heritage of Green Hills, Shillington, Pa.’s premiere senior living community, residents share an understanding: “We are a family and this is our home.” That simple but powerful sentiment is at the heart of the Heritage Resident Benefit Fund, a charitable initiative dedicated to helping fellow residents stay at The Heritage when unexpected financial hardship arises.

Founded in 2014 by residents, the Heritage Resident Benefit Fund is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization driven by compassion, community, and care. Its mission is clear: no resident should have to leave their home due to unforeseen financial difficulties. If a resident outlives their retirement savings, the Fund provides critical assistance that allows them to remain part of the community they love.

A Personal Commitment to Giving Back

Kathie Holm, a board member for the Fund, knows firsthand the importance of community support. A retired clinical nurse specialist in neuroscience and pain management, Holm moved to The Heritage after the sudden loss of her husband. Downsizing from a large home, she leaned on friends and fellow residents to find her footing — and in doing so, found a new purpose.

Encouraged by neighbors and mentors, Holm joined the Resident Benefit Fund Committee, bringing her lifelong dedication to service with her. “With my background on nonprofit boards, it felt like a natural way to give back,” she explains. “It’s part of who I am — helping others, building community.”

Supporting the Fund, Supporting Each Other

The Fund’s board — composed of residents and outside professionals from the greater community with expertise in banking, fundraising, and nonprofit management — ensures wise stewardship and thoughtful decision-making. “We have a great mix of people with different talents who really care about the mission,” Holm says.

The community’s support for the Fund is creative, energetic, and grows yearly. From Annual Casino Nights and Golf Outings to car washes and note card fundraisers, the efforts are as diverse as the residents themselves.

Holm has spearheaded several successful initiatives. Last year, she coordinated the sale of note cards featuring photos taken around the Heritage campus, including a now-famous shot of a resident mid-air during water volleyball. Another big win was a Mr. Car Wash fundraiser that brought in $2,000 for the Fund.

Casino Night, held each fall, remains the Fund’s flagship event. It’s a joyful evening of games, raffles, live auctions, and community connection. “Even if you’re not a gambler, you’ll have a great time,” Holm laughs. “It’s about supporting your neighbors while having fun.”

The Golf Outing, which will be held on May 16, 2025, is also incredibly popular — and lucrative for the Fund. Foursomes from across the region will flock to the Flying Hills Golf Club for a day of golf, food, fun, and philanthropy, before heading to a special dinner at The Heritage.

The committee has also launched website pages for people seeking information and for those wishing to donate, and educates new residents about the Fund at welcoming events like ice cream socials. “We want everyone to understand — this is about helping each other,” Holm says. “That’s what family does.”

Looking Ahead

The Resident Benefit Fund has already assisted several residents, with a current balance nearing $500,000. Its long-term goal is a sustainable $1 million endowment that ensures ongoing support for future generations.

“Helping people stay in their homes, among friends, in a place they love — that’s what it’s all about,” Holm says. “We care for each other here. That’s the miracle of this place.”
