A Love Story 50 Years in the Making

Some couples fall in love at first sight. Others take a little longer to find their way back home.

Shirley Smith Stauffer and Bill Stauffer first knew each other as children growing up in the small town of Ringtown, Pa., before life, as it tends to do, carried them in different directions. Careers, marriages, children, and decades passed. They both lived full, busy, and happy lives — just not together.

Shirley was married and widowed three times, while Bill had been married for 42 years before his first wife passed away. Collectively, they have 20 children and stepchildren, 50 grandchildren, and 52 great-grandchildren.

It wasn’t until Bill learned that she would be attending a school reunion nearly 50 years after they graduated from high school that their paths crossed again.

“I didn’t actually go to that reunion, but I heard she was going to be there,” he says. “So I decided to look her up.”

Bill found Shirley through her sister and reached out with an invitation to lunch.

“I said, ‘That’s okay, but I really don’t want to get involved with anybody,’” Shirley explains. “I told him that I’ve been widowed three times, and I have all these kids and grandkids, and I was very busy babysitting and helping kids set up homes and decorating and going to weddings and going to baptisms. And he said, ‘Do you like sports? I have season tickets to the Phillies, and I’m just looking for somebody to go to the ball game.’”

As it happens, Shirley loves sports. “I said, ‘Oh, that I’d like to do.’”

But something unexpected happened after that game. Phone calls turned into long conversations, and friendship grew into something more.

By April, their relationship had been blessed at church. By the following year, they were building a life together — quite literally.

Restoring Billshir Farm Together

In 2003, Shirley and Bill purchased a long-abandoned log cabin in Honey Brook that dated back to 1838. It was in rough shape, but they didn’t hesitate. They saw possibility. “It was falling down,” Shirley says. “It was post and beam. I said, ‘I love this place. I want to be here.’ And we didn’t look any further. Sometimes you just know.”

Over the next two decades, they restored and improved upon the historic property piece by piece, from a new roof, new siding, and new windows on the original house to an additional carriage house they built from scratch. Every year brought a new project. Every room carried a story. They preserved original features, including a well beneath the kitchen floor, and added thoughtful touches that reflected both history and heart.

The cleverly named Billshir Farm (a combination of the couple’s names) became so beloved that it was featured twice on Chester County Day, a regional tour celebrating historic homes. It was also a gathering place for children, grandchildren, and extended family that spanned multiple marriages and generations.

A New Chapter at The Heritage

When circumstances prompted them to look for their next home, Shirley and Bill knew exactly what they wanted: a place that felt right. And they found it at The Heritage at Green Hills, a premier senior living community in Shillington, Pa.

“We walked in, and I said, ‘This is where I want to go,’” Shirley says. Just as with the old log cabin years earlier, the feeling was immediate and certain.

Today, Shirley and Bill are settling into life at The Heritage of Green Hills, enjoying the comfort of maintenance-free living, a welcoming community, and the peace of knowing they’ve found a place that supports both independence and togetherness.
